We travel. We travel to places new, yet we forget the journey. And we ignore the road, without which our progress would be so much harder.

I find that it takes me at least three days to settle in a new place and to even consider making images that I feel may be worthwhile. So on a holiday to Iceland’s West Fjords with at most two nights in one place I knew that at best I would come away with an impression. I’ve been experimenting with my own movement through the landscape, and that of others. So far this has been on foot, but the idea of ‘filming’ the landscape from a moving vehicle dates back to my first trip to Iceland in September 2014. Such drama, yet on many occasions no opportunity to stop that I wished for a dash cam. From this developed the seed for Uncertain Momentum. September 2016 was therefore in a sense, unfinished business, no dash cam but an iPhone and the opportunity to play.

Beyond the glimpse that these afford of a mostly empty road, an abrupt meeting of water and land, a big sky, and sometimes rain, beyond the memory, is a reminder of our small place in the world.
